Bente spørger Shirley Back i Californien:

Dear Shirley
We have a picture showing Walter Marwin Julian, who was adopted by Helga - (He was a son of Helgas sister Laura with the name Franklin) - He is sitting with a little girl called Linda. Who is she? Can you help us?

With love
Bente

Shirley svarer straks:
Dear Bente
Linda, the little girl sitting next to him, is his daughter by his first wife, Terry. He also had a son by this marriage, Chucky.
He was married quite a while later to a woman named Jane, who had two children by her first marriage, Shedon and Shelly.
He and Jane had two boys named Stacy and Scotty.

Much love, Shirley

Dear Shirley!
Thank you very much for your e-mail, in which you told us about Linda and her father Walther. I hope, that you will give us some more information about our relatives in California.
We are trying to get information about relatives from the past in order to make a genealogical tree, and if it is possible to get some dates.
Would you like to tell me the following?

  1. We know that Helga died 1969? When did her husbands (Peter Back and Charles Julian) die? How did the family earn their living?
  2. Do you know the dates of Emma and Laura? Where did they live. Their husbands? What happened to them? Children?
  3. Do you ever heard about a brother called Valdemar?
  4. Did you and Ralph marry during WWII and where were you born? When did Ralph die? Did Ralph ever get over his troubles (bad experiences) during the war?
  5. Will you please give us the dates of Carol, Joan and Ellen and their relatives?

I really do not hope, that this will be too much for you!

With much love
Bente

Dear Bente
I will try my best to answer some of your questions but will answer the ones I can as I get the answers.

Helga died in 1968 Charlie died years before then while she was still in Palo Alto - she moved up here around 1963, but am not absolutely sure of that date. Her first husband,
Peter, died after Helga died - he lived in San Diego. (Will try to get these dates somewhere.)
She and Peter lived in Orland, California and had a small farm. They had moved out from Chicago with some other Danish friends. I think they grew prunes.
Walter (the oldest child) was born in Chicago and June who drowned in the irrigation ditch on their farm, was born in Orland, as was Ralph (who was born soon after June's death). Peter left the family soon after and went to San Francisco to llive.

Helga, Walter and Ralph left for San Francisco as it was impossible for them to make a living without Peter doing the heavy work. After her divorce from Peter, Helga met and married Charles Julian. (we all called him Charley) . Helga had attended Beauty School in SF then moved her family to Palo Alto, where the boys grew up.

I was born in l922 in Denver, Colorado (I have a sister, Jean, and a brother, Philip). I met Ralph when we both attended college at the University of Oregon. We were married after he returned from fighting in WWII - He was never the same happy person after the war-they kept his division too long on the front lines - Attu, Leyte, the Phillippines then Okinawa. All that saved them from having to invade Japan was the atom bombs being dropped on Hiroshima. Ralph died in Feb 22, 1994. He had had two open heart surgeries one was in 1955 and the other in 1993.

I will try to get some of the dates you asked about-will send them to you soon-

Shirley Gillettt f. 25.04. 1922 i Denver, Colorado

much love,
Shirley
